There is no better person to speak with about your future career than the person who is going to hire you. Ask the questions and get answers to from the people who do the job every day.
Visit the Schools
Find out what each school has to offer, visit the location and be sure this is where you would like to take your training.
Student Employment Success Rate
All schools should be aware of their student success rate, ask what the rate is. The Trucking Industry is hiring, with proper training that meets the standard everyone should be employed at the end of training. Ask what companies are participating in the internship component of the program – this is critical to your success. If the school isn’t offering an internship, find one that does.
Educate yourself on the Industry
Learn about the Industry you want to start working in. The Trucking Industry employees close to 500,000 people and has a lot of good things to offer. Ask questions, the good and the bad, it is better to know up front what is expected of you.
Checklist for Training
Minimum 19 years of age
- You must be at least 19 years of age.
Driver’s Abstract
- Obtained from local Registry of Motor Vehicles
- The driver’s abstract shows employers what your driving habits are, a clean abstract is ideal, however exceptions can be made for 2-3 infractions depending on the severity of the infraction
- Lengthy driver’s abstracts will cause barriers to employment opportunities
- If you have infractions on your abstract and aren’t sure if you face employment obstacles, contact THRSC Atlantic or speak with employers
Criminal Record Search
- Obtained from your local Town Police or RCMP detachment
- A clean criminal record search is ideal for employment in the Trucking Industry
- Having a criminal record may prevent you from crossing the border
- Having a criminal record may limit your employment opportunities in the Trucking Industry, limiting you to local or Canada only work.
- It is always best to speak with THRSC Atlantic or a potential employer to determine whether or not you are employable with your criminal record.
Letter of Intent
- The Letter of Intent is not a guarantee of employment
- The Letter of Intent is acknowledgment from an employer that you have sat down and spoke with them about the Industry
- The Letter of Intent acknowledges that based on the information you have provided to the employer at the time of writing the letter, that they would consider hiring you
- If you have a criminal record, the Letter of Intent should acknowledge that the employer is aware and that you are still able to be employed
- Speaking with employers about the Letter of Intent will enable you to see what your career opportunities will be after you successfully complete training
Valid Driver’s License
- Must have a valid Class 5 license
- License must be free of graduated licensing (“N” must be removed) prior to training
- Air Brakes, depending on Training Institution requirements
Class 1 Medical
- Medical form can be obtained through your local Registry of Motor Vehicles
- To be valid, must be within 4 months of Truck School Training end date
- If you have any medical conditions noted on your medical, the medical will be forwarded to the Medical Review Board for approval of a Class 1 Upgrade
Essential Skills Assesment
- Essential Skills are a strong indicator of success among our professional drivers.
- Minimum requirements: Reading – Level 2, Numeracy – Level 1 and Document Use – Level 1 must be obtained to successfully meet the minimum industry standard for professional truck driver training.
