Job Summary
The Driver Training & Onboarding Specialist works with the company’s HR and Safety Teams to successfully onboard new professional drivers to the fleet. In addition, this position involves leading the training of newly licensed drivers and TFW drivers that are new to the company. Other tasks involved with maintaining the company’s safety program will be an ongoing part of the role. Taking a proactive approach to training, the role involves working with our team of drivers to enhance their skills, provide remedial training and development, and contribute to our culture of safety.
Duties and Accountabilities:
– Take a leading role in our New Driver Training Program and TFW Training Program. Specifically, you will develop training & development materials, documentation/checklists, and oversight measures.
– Assist the HR team in the management of our New Driver Training Program and take accountability for the quality of training for new drivers and sign off upon their completion of the program.
– Assist the HR team in the training of TFW drivers when they arrive in Canada. This will involve field training and preparing them for their DOT road tests.
– Take a leadership role with our group of driver coaches to develop their skills, provide guidance, and standardize procedures and training benchmarks.
– Develop a procedure regarding an orientation and onboarding process for newly hired drivers including training, paperwork, documentation, policies/procedures, and introductions to staff. – Review mandatory training with new hires including hours of service, weights and dimensions, and WHMIS.
– Maintain constructive working relationships with our industry private career college partners. – Conduct driving assessments on potential hires to help the HR team make wise hiring decisions. – Assist in post-incident investigations as related to driver behaviours.
– Provide remedial training or PDIC to drivers in need of skills upgrading.
– Encourage and monitor progress of individual drivers that have undergone PDIC or have needed extra training.
– Create and maintain a fuel efficiency program and monitor driver performance related to efficient driving.
– Create and maintain records to document training and development of drivers. – Create and implement ongoing and/or annual training programs to supplement driver skills and keep the fleet updated about new regulations.
– Assist in the management of driver hours of service (ELD) and work with HR team to document violations relating to progressive discipline.
– Assist in managing driver use of satellite communication and macro input.
– Keep abreast of new technologies and regulations that relate to the industry. – Become a go-to person for driver concerns to gain insight for employee retention initiatives.
Required Skills and Abilities
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
– Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to provide constructive feedback to employees. – Must be adaptable and able to respond to changing priorities.
– Adequate computer skills are required, including the Microsoft Office suite and the ability to learn new software.
– Must be able to build strong relationships with drivers to foster their professional development. – Must be aware and responsive to generational and cultural differences in the delivery of training and development.
Required Education and Experience
– Possession of a Class 1/AZ license is required.
– High school diploma is a requirement.
– A post-secondary education is an asset.
– Experience in the transportation industry is required.
– Experience as a professional truck driver is required.
– A respectable driver’s abstract is required.
– Previous experience in training/coaching professional drivers is an asset.
– Experience in designing/delivering training programs is an asset.
– Experience with adult learning techniques is an asset.
– Experience in working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures is an asset. – Experience in dealing with conflict is an asset.
– Experience working in a safety-sensitive environment and being an advocate for safe working practices is an asset.
Working Conditions
– Prolonged periods of time at an office/computer terminal.
– Prolonged periods of time in an outdoor environment, conducting training around heavy equipment.
– Prolonged periods of time in a tractor trailer unit either driving or in the passenger seat to facilitate training.
– Proper personal protective equipment may be required, including but not limited to, safety footwear, a hardhat, gloves, and safety glasses.
– Normal working hours will be Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 17:00. Irregular working hours will occur from time to time to enable training in night driving situations or due to operational requirements. – Occasional day trips and overnight travel to company/third-party locations to conduct training will be required.
– Some travel between offices will require driving a tractor trailer unit to use for training purposes. – Access to a reliable vehicle is required.
